Step-by-step guide to install Codex Dream Skin on macOS and Windows. Complete tutorial with troubleshooting tips for OpenAI Codex desktop theming.

How to Install Codex Dream Skin: Complete Guide

This tutorial walks you through installing Codex Dream Skin on both macOS and Windows. The entire process takes less than 60 seconds.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:

  • OpenAI Codex desktop app installed and working
  • macOS 12+ (for Mac) or Windows 10/11 (for Windows)
  • About 2 MB of free disk space

macOS Installation (Apple Silicon & Intel)

Step 1: Download

Download the latest version of Codex Dream Skin. The file is approximately 2 MB.

Step 2: Extract

Double-click the downloaded .zip file to extract it. macOS will create a folder with the project files.

Step 3: Open the Installer

Navigate to the macos/ directory inside the extracted folder.

Step 4: Run the Install Script

Double-click Install Codex Dream Skin.command.

macOS Security Note: If you see a warning saying "macOS cannot verify the developer", right-click the file and select Open, then click Open again in the dialog. This is a standard security measure for scripts downloaded from the internet.

Step 5: Launch

A desktop shortcut will be created. Double-click it to launch Codex with your chosen skin.

Restoring the Default Look

Double-click the Restore Codex .command file in the same folder. Your Codex will instantly return to the official appearance.

Windows Installation

Step 1: Download

Download the latest version of Codex Dream Skin.

Step 2: Extract

Right-click the .zip file and select Extract All.

Step 3: Run the Installer

Open the windows/ folder and double-click Install-Windows.bat.

If a security prompt appears, click "More info" → "Run anyway".

The installer automatically closes Codex (if running), installs the skin, and relaunches Codex with your new look.

Restoring the Default Look

Double-click the "Codex Dream Skin - Restore" shortcut on your Desktop.

Choosing a Skin

After installation, browse the 44 built-in skins and select your favorite. You can switch between skins anytime by editing the configuration file.

To use a custom image:

  • Place your image file (JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF) in the theme directory
  • Update the skin configuration to reference your image
  • Relaunch Codex Dream Skin

Troubleshooting

macOS: "Cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified"

Right-click the .command file → Open → Open again.

Windows: "Execution policy error"

The Install-Windows.bat handles this automatically. If it still appears, open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned

Skin doesn't apply

Make sure Codex is fully closed before launching with the skin script. Check that the theme files exist in the correct directory.

Want to go back to default?

Use the desktop Restore shortcut (macOS: .command file, Windows: .lnk shortcut). This removes all skin modifications and returns Codex to factory appearance.
